Festival of pool
The Cumbria Pool Association held their annual festival of pool at JJ's in Workington last week with 4 events taking place. The Ladies open was won by Workington's own Estelle Poole who played great pool throughout the day to collect her first major title. Estelle had to win 4 matches and come from 3 nil down in the final against another Workington star Emma Christopherson to clinch what ended up as a tense final!

The Men's flyer was won by current County champion Grant Porter who beat Workington's Steven Cook in the final. Steven played some great pool on the day by beating established County players to get to the final however Grant Porter was too good for him in the final.

The fun started though when the speed pool championship & 14 to 1 championship got on the way! These are very popular events with many players fancying their chances of becoming a County champion in these two categories. The speed pool championship fastest player in Cumbria for 2009 is Dan Hancox from Workington who managed to pot all 15 balls in 58 seconds! The 14 to 1 championship saw Alan McLeod clear four racks with a total of 60 balls potted to claim this County title. The day was a success & hopefully this will grow into an even bigger event next year!!

The next Cumbria Pool event will be held this Sunday at JJ's in Workington, The County Masters 3rd Series event will start at 10.30. Contact Garry Southern on 07701058463 for further details.

County News

The County squad have suffered some heavy defeats in their last three matches versus Lancashire, West Yorkshire & Cheshire.

The match against Lancashire saw some solid performances from the opposing players, however it has got to be said that our own players failed to take some key chances. There is some learning we can take from this defeat, it is just a matter of keeping our heads up & giving our all!

The match against West Yorkshire was disappointing with regards to the lack of players turning up for this away fixture. Only 10 ‘A’ team squad members could make it to Ossett along with 12 ‘B’ team squad members. There was though some good news for the Ladies team with 4 new recruits joining the County set up. Sarah Morley, Suzanne Kirby, Kirsty Shuttleworth & Kelsey Robinson! This is great news for the ladies team as we continue to try & build a solid ladies squad!

The match itself against West Yorkshire had some indifferent performances from our players, whilst the likes of twice world champion Chris Melling was putting on a show winning all his frames. The men’s ‘A’ & ‘B’ teams were missing some experienced players and this did show throughout the day.

Transport expenses were also paid out at West Yorkshire for the first time this season. An assessment of our financial status at mid season for the CPA has shown that some fuel expenses could be paid out at this point in time, which is great news for the players. Further fuels payments will be paid out at the last match of the season at Lancashire.

The game at home to Cheshire seen a very disappointing turn out of players from the men’s squad with only 20 players attending. 2 New players were recruited on the day so full teams could be fielded. The A team lost a close battle 23-21, the B team was thumped 33-11 & the ladies team also got beat 34-10. Following this match, reserve squad members will be sent an invitation to attend the rest of the season & will be guaranteed to play!

The CPA held it’s first festival of pool day at Barrow’s Red River Club on the 17th August. The fun day was arranged primarily to raise money for charity (Asthma Charity), however it was also used to try and encourage some of the Barrow ladies pool players to come back and play County pool. Unfortunately the event was very disappointing, with only 3 Barrow ladies turning up for the event and only having 6 in total. On the brighter side of the event, £135 was raised for charity, which was excellent considering the turn out. Our thanks go to Mavis Lakeland of the Red River Club for allowing us to use the venue!

A group format was used for the Ladies open, which saw 6 ladies taking part. The eventual winner of the group was Sheila Wright of Barrow who won 4 matches out of 5.

The mixed doubles competition saw Sheila Wright take another prize when she paired up with County A team player Kyle Brown to the competition by beating Peter Westgarth & Kelsey Robinson in the final 2-1.

The speed pool championship was eagerly contested with eventual winner John Tompkins taking the title with a time of 1 minute 8 seconds.

The 14 to 1 championship was another well-contested competition with Penrith’s speed machine John Tompkins managing to win that with a score of 33!

So in summary the day was a small success for raising some funds for the Asthma charity but the ladies recruitment side of it was a real disappointment.

Due to the CPA changing home venues in the very near future, some of the proposed dates for the Cumbria Masters ranking series will change. This is due to some unforeseen delays in the refurbishment of the new venue, however the CPA is committed in running these events as soon as the new venue is open. The proposed new dates will be announced as soon as possible.

County Pool Tables for sale!

The Cumbria Pool Association has decided to sell its two pool tables as they will no longer be required once the CPA have moved into their new home venue. The two tables have recently been re-clothed at an expense of £100 a table. Both tables are in good condition however there is no coin mechanism fitted to either table.

We are giving the affiliated leagues a chance to buy these tables prior to them being advertised locally. Each table will be sold for £150.

If anyone would like to buy these tables, then please contact Garry Southern on 07701058463.

If you have any information that you would like added to our new website, please let myself or Andrew Moore know.

                                      Annual County Men Singles Championships

A new name will be on the Men’s and Ladies County Championship trophy’s for 2008! Congratulations to Grant Porter & Leonie Coombes who are the respected winners of the 2 events held on the 1st June at Pockets.

The men’s event saw 42 entries on the day which was a little disappointing however the skills on show did not fail to live up to it’s prestigious title.
The shock of the preliminary round saw Workington’s Dan Hancox beat last year’s finalist Kyle Brown from Barrow in Furness 3-2. In the first round, three County A team players crashed out, with past winner Garry Southern losing to Dennis Horan, Tom Griffith losing to Alan Rushgrove and Steve McLeod losing to John Elliott! The last 16 saw another surprise results with Penrith’s John Tompkins beating last year’s winner Dave Todd 3-0.

The quarter finals saw some solid performances from former County player Andrew Armistead from Barrow in Furness who beat Penrith’s Paul Kipling 3-1, young starlet from Bootle Kevin Kirkham beat Cumbria A team colleague John Tompkins 3-1, Alan McLeod thwarted Richard Kirkham’s run by beating him 3-1 and Grant Porter beat Carlisle’s Alan Rushgrove 3-1.

The semi finals were both close affairs. Andrew Armistead and Kevin Kirkham both showed early signs nerves in this battle with several missed chances from both players. However it was Andrew who held his nerve to win the match 4-3 and to progress into his first County Singles Final. In the second semi, Alan McLeod and Grant Porter produced a high quality match with both players producing clearances on most occasions, however Alan has a great chance to pull the match back to 3-3 but snookered himself on his last red, Alan though produced a great shot to get out of the snooker and then snooker Grant in the process. An all out hit or bust shot was played by Grant when he managed not only to escape the snooker but managed to pot his intended ball into the side pocket, resulting in him cleaning up and finishing the match 4-2.

The final was one-way traffic, with Grant Porter always looking the more comfortable in what was his first County Singles Final. At 3-1 to Grant, Andrew did have a glorious chance to pull it back to 3-2 however the tension of the final just proved too much for the Kendal man and a failed pot attempt resulted in Grant potting a simple black over the middle bag to claim his first Cumbria title and a cheque for £160.

Annual County Ladies Singles Championships

The ladies championship ended up a real disappointment for the organisers with only 5 ladies turning up. So a change to the normal knock out competition was decided to enable the ladies to make a day of it. A group system was played with all 5 ladies playing each other over 3 frames. The lady who finished top of the group won the trophy. The 5 ladies who entered were Sarah Messenger from Workington, Liz Hutchinson from Penrith, Estelle Poole from Workington, Leonie Coombes from Egremont and Katrina Rushgrove from Carlisle. Katrina was the only non-county player to enter the competition however she proved to be a tough cookie to beat and only missed out on the title on frame difference. The winner of the competition was Leonie Coombes who produced some solid pool to win 3 out of her 4 games. Congratulations!

The Cumbria A team had yet another great result, repeating their heroics from their previous match to win the last 2 frames & match by 23-21. This result puts the Cumbria A team top of their respected league. There were several solid performances within the team, most notable from Alan McLeod, Steven McLeod, Carl Ennis, Grant Porter & Garry Southern who all won 3 out of thier 4 games.

The Cumbria B team however are continuing to improve and should have had this match in the bag, although a solid performance did see the side draw the match 22-22. A great performance by Andrew Henderson from Lamplugh saw him win 4 out 4 with Gavin Simpson from Whitehaven & Shane Kane from Maryport providing solid back up with 3 out 4 wins each.

The Ladies team however continue to battle on, they lost 31- 13 to an experienced side which had a couple of past international players taking part. The ladies are still struggling for numbers and are seeking any ladies wanting to play pool. If there are any females who are interested or would like further information please contact Garry Southern on 07701058463 or Andrew Moore on 07766566165.
